Maritime Emergency Response Team

Wikborg Rein’s Maritime Emergency Response Team is led by partners with extensive experience in the practical and legal issues associated with casualties and other maritime emergencies. The team assists insurers, owners and operators in connection with a wide range of incidents including collisions, groundings, capsizings, fires, allisions and pollution throughout the globe and particularly in Europe, Asia and Africa.

With London remaining the chosen jurisdiction and English law the choice of law in many such cases, the Team has expanded to take on English law expertise. Simon Tatham, a leading English shipping solicitor, has been recruited to the team in London. This enables the firm to provide yet further strength, depth and a hands-on litigation capability in London as well as a co-ordinated response across a number of jurisdictions. With lawyers located in Europe and Asia, team members can be on site at very short notice. The team benefits from a network of local lawyers and technical consultants.

The Maritime Emergency Response Team is led by Morten Lund Mathisen, joined now by Simon Tatham in London, and is regularly instructed in high-profile cases. In recent years members of the Team have handled numerous casualties, including:

"Far Grimshader" – collion with semi-sub "Songa Dee" in the North Sea
“West Atlas” – jack-up rig fire, damaged following blow out off Australia; wreck removal
“Full City” – general cargo vessel grounding off Langesund, Norway: salvage, oil pollution and prosecution of crew members”
“Heavylift Ancora”; loss of jack-up rig in mid-Atlantic
“Federal Kivalina” – fully laden bulk carrier grounding near Kristiansund, Norway; salvage
“Bourbon Dolphin” – anchor handling tug supply vessel capsizing off Shetland; sinking, total loss and casualties
“Tzini” – bulk carrier grounding near Su-ao, Taiwan; pollution and salvage
“Repubblica di Genova” – laden ro-ro/container ship capsizing in the port of Antwerp, Belgium; re-floating and cargo claims
“Server” – bulk carrier grounding off Bergen, Norway; oil pollution and wreck removal
“Fjord Champion” – oil tanker grounding off Søgne, Norway; fire and salvage
“Hyundai No. 105” – laden car carrier colliding with the VLCC “Kaminesan” in the Singapore Strait; sinking, wreck removal and cargo claims
“Rocknes” – laden bulk carrier grounding and capsizing off Bergen, Norway; oil pollution, sinking, re-floating and casualties
“Panam Serena” – chemical tanker exploding and catching fire in the port of Porto Torres, Sardinia, Italy; total loss and casualties
“Vans Princess” – laden ro-ro vessel grounding off Tartous, Syria; total loss, oil pollution and cargo claims
“Tricolor” – laden car carrier colliding with the container ship “Kariba” in the English Channel, sinking, wreck removal and cargo claims
“Hual Europe” – laden car carrier grounding off Tokyo Bay, Japan; fire, oil pollution, wreck removal and cargo claims
“Amorgos” – bulk carrier grounding off Taiwan; sinking and oil pollution
“Kodima” – laden bulk carrier grounding off Cornwall, UK; salvage, clean up and cargo claims
"Norwegian Dream" – cruise ship colliding with the container ship "Ever Decent” in the English channel; fire, salvage, personal injury and cargo claims
