Drafting and negotiating CO2 storage agreements presents several challenges due to the complex nature of this greenfield industry. Well-drafted CO2 storage agreements are crucial in ensuring successful carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.

Contracting Parties to the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter 1972 (the London Convention) and the 1996 London Protocol have taken steps to address potential harm to the marine environment from the evaluation of new experimental technologies designed to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Electrification of the Norwegian continental shelf (“NCS”) will significantly reduce Norway’s carbon emissions, and we expect to see a future increase in investments in electrification projects in the coming years. However, important clarifications from the Norwegian authorities are required in order to establish more predictability for such high value offshore grid investments.

Cathrine has significant experience advising various players within the CCS, oil and gas industries. Within oil and gas she advises on a broad range of matters, including legal and commercial aspects of offshore exploration, development, production and sales, as well as M&A projects. She also works extensively with CCS, including transactions, project development and CO2 storage agreements.

Her previous experience includes several years serving as a senior legal counsel for DEA Norge AS, an NCS oil and gas operator, and as a managing associate in the law firm Thommessen. She is recognised within "Energy: Oil and Gas" in Chambers Global and Chambers Europe, and has for several years in a row been ranked as one of Norway's up-and-coming lawyers within oil and gas in the Norwegian financial daily Finansavisen's lawyer ranking. She is also a "Recommended Lawyer" within oil and gas in Legal 500.

Cathrine is a member of the Norwegian Bar Association's panel on Hydropower, Energy and Oil and Gas law. She has also been a member of several working groups set down by the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association in order to develop model agreements for use on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, and was inter alia part of the working group producing the latest revision of the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association's standard SPA for licence transactions.
