Possible future development in EU sanctions relating to Libya

10.04.2019

On 11 April 2019, the High Representative of the EU, Federica Mogherini, made statements that, by some, have been interpreted as a possible warning of further EU sanctions relating to Libya.

According to the Press Release from the Council of the EU, Mogherini expressed the EU's concern about the Libyan National Army's military attack on Tripoli and "the involvement of terrorist and criminal elements in the fighting, including individuals listed by the UN Security Council". The EU and its Member States therefore "call on their international and regional partners to exert their influence" and to "send the unequivocal message to the parties involved that there is no military solution to the crisis, only a political one." Mogherini also reminded that those who violate international law "will be held accountable".
