US renews legal basis for sanctions against Iran

17.03.2019

On 12 March 2019, the US renewed the legal basis for its sanctions against Iran.

Technically, the renewal was done by the US President continuing the national emergency that was declared with respect to Iran in Executive Order 12957 (as amended), see White House Notice. This national emergency was first declared in 1995, "to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of the Government of Iran".

All nuclear-related US sanctions against Iran were re-imposed in August 2018, after the US unilaterally ceased its participation in the Iranian nuclear agreement (JCPOA) in May 2018.

The renewal of sanctions lasts for 1 year from 15 March 2019.
