Shipping industry faces regulatory uncertainty as member states adjourn adoption for one year.

The current geopolitical situation leads to concerns in Norway regarding property acquisitions by buyers with associations to foreign states in strategic sensitive areas.

With its history and extensive experience with CO2 management as an oil and gas nation, Norway is a leading country in building a new CCS value chain in the fight against climate change.

The FuelEU Maritime Regulation introduces a voluntary pooling mechanism. If shipping companies choose to use the pooling mechanism, they may effectively use the over-performance of one ship to compensate for the under-performance of another ship. This could present new commercial opportunities for shipping companies.

The inclusion of the shipping industry in the EU Emission Trading System as per Directive 2003/87/EC ("the EU ETS") from 1 January 2024 is now fast approaching. According to Article 3 in the said directive, it is the "shipping company" that is responsible for compliance with the EU ETS-obligations, hereunder to surrender emission allowances.

Kristine Engevik is a Senior Associate in the Shipping Offshore group at Wikborg Rein's Bergen office. She assists clients in the shipping, offshore and energy sectors with project development, contractual matters and dispute resolution.

Kristine has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating offshore contracts, including drilling contracts, supply contracts and other offshore-related contractual matters. She also has experience in dispute resolution within the shipping and offshore sectors, including contract interpretation and the handling of commercial disputes. In addition, she has expertise in compliance.

In recent years, she has been actively involved in a number of projects relating to carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS), and has gained solid experience of the green transition in the maritime sector and the development of renewable energy projects.
